What is a Carer Visa?

Carer visas allow sponsored applicants to live in Australia permanently to care for family members with a long-term illness or medical condition. It must be established that the Australian permanent resident or citizen who requires a carer is unable to get access to care options onshore.

There are two types of carer visas:

• Carer Visa Subclass 836 (for applicants already in Australia)
• Carer Visa Subclass 116 (for applicants outside Australia)

Carer Visa 836 Requirements (For Applicants)

In order to qualify for a carer visa grant, you must fulfil the following eligibility criteria:

• You must obtain sponsorship from a relative or a relative’s family member who genuinely needs substantial care
• You must be qualified or simply able to provide consistent and sufficient medical and physical support for your relative
• You must be a substantive visa holder (except a transit visa subclass 771)
• You must be in Australia during your application
• You must satisfy all character, health, and security requirements

Carer Visa 836 Requirements (For Sponsors)

Before qualifying to apply for a carer visa 836, your sponsor also needs to meet certain criteria, namely:

• Your sponsor must be either an Australian permanent resident, citizen, or an eligible New Zealander
• Your sponsor must prove genuine need to receive carer services and that no adequate care options are available onshore
• Your sponsor must be able to support you and your family members whom you will bring (if any) financially for at least the first two (2) years
• Your sponsor must undergo a Bupa Medical examination to determine whether your sponsor is a long-term patient, has a chronic illness, and can’t complete basic and daily tasks due to this medical condition

Carer Visa 836 Processing Time

As is the case with other types of visas, processing times depend on individual circumstances, volume of carer visa applications, accuracy and completeness of submitted documents, etc. But the estimated processing time for carer visa 836 is: up to four (4) and a half years.

Carer Visa 836 Cost

You would need to prepare at least A$1,825 for the first assessment stage. This is for you as the principal applicant. You would need to pay additional fees if you’re applying with a partner, child, and other family members. Also take note that you will need to pay another fee for the second assessment stage if you pass the first one.
