    About the Global Talent Employer Sponsored
    (GTES) Visa

    The GTES visa program is designed to enable Australian employers to sponsor highly skilled migrants for niche positions that no available or appropriately qualified Australian worker can fill.

    Before an employer and the Department could enter into an agreement, Australian businesses must first prove that they cannot fill the said position via any existing skilled visa options. If approved, you can then sponsor overseas workers for a Temporary Skill Shortage (TSS) visa subclass 482 under the GTES program.

    Program Highlights

    The Global Talent Employer Sponsored program is designed to attract people with exceptional technical skills and talent, which can be transferred to the Australian workforce and in turn encourage business growth.

    Some of the key features of this program include:

    • Access to highly-skilled roles not limited to occupations listed in the TSS visa short-term and medium–term streams
    • Higher earning threshold for eligible applicants
    • ‘Negotiable’ visa requirements with age and occupation concessions
    • Four-year validity with a permanent residency pathway after three years
    • Priority processing

    GTES Visa Streams

    The Global Talent Scheme is split into two streams.

    Established Business Stream

    Under the Established Business stream, approved sponsoring employers can sponsor outstanding international talents with advanced skills. The Australian government expects that this’ll help established businesses to be more globally competitive and innovative.

    Criteria for Employers

    • Employers must prove that access to the GTES visa program will generate more job opportunities and knowledge transfer for Australians;
    • To request a GTES agreement, employer applicants must show labour market testing evidence for the specific niche positions;
    • The sponsoring employer should have a good standing with relevant regulatory agencies, including compliance with workplace laws;
    • The employer must be a publicly listed company with a minimum annual turnover of at least AUD 4 million for each of the past two (2) years;
    • The requesting employer must be endorsed as a TSS accredited sponsor.

    Criteria for Applicants

    • Applicant must not have any familial relationship with directors and/or shareholders;
    • Qualifications must correspond with the highly skilled role being applied for;
    • Skilled worker must have at least 3 years relevant work experience;
    • Applicant must have the ability to pass on skills to Australians;
    • The position must have annual earnings commensurate to the minimum Fair Work High Income Threshold;
    • Workers must satisfy health, character, and security requirements.

    • Minimum annual earnings for the position must be at the market salary rate, but not less than AUD 80,000; includes equity but must have a cash component no less than the Temporary Skilled Migration Income Threshold (TSMIT), which is AUD 73,150 effective 1 July 2024;

    GTES Request & Application : Step by Step
    Process

    1

    Step 1: Labour Market Testing

    As a primary requirement before lodging a GTES request, you must first determine if the position(s) cannot be filled by an available and skilled Australian worker. You must likewise be able to prove that you are not able to fill the position through existing skilled visa programs.

    2

    Step 2: Expression of GTES Interest

    Under the established business stream, you can lodge your GTES labour agreement application online using an ImmiAccount. Make sure to attach all pertinent documents that will support your application.

    If applying as a startup business, email globaltalentscheme@homeaffairs.gov.au and send the following information:

    • Business name and ABN or ACN
    • Description of the position(s) required
    • Evidence of why the position(s) is unavailable or inaccessible via standard visa programs
    • Minimum AUD 50,000 proof of investment from an investment fund registered as an Early Stage Venture Capital Limited Partnership, or;
    • Receipt of an Accelerating Commercialisation Grant

    The Department will then arrange an assessment for your startup to be done by the Startup Advisory Panel.

    3

    Step 3: Signing

    If your business was found to be fully eligible for and compliant with the key GTES program conditions, you will receive an agreement due for signature.

    4

    Step 4: Nomination

    The Department will provide you with a Permission Request ID, which you must use to nominate overseas workers online.

    5

    Step 5: Visa Application

    The nominated skilled migrants will also have to apply for the TSS visa online using an ImmiAccount and submit all required documents. The Department will assess the application in accordance with the requirements outlined in the GTES agreement.

      Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

      Who is eligible for a GTES visa?

      The employer-sponsored global talent visa is open and intended for individuals with cutting-edge skills that can help innovate an already established Australian business, or those who can contribute their top-notch skills to Australia’s developing startup ecosystem.

      How do employers qualify to sponsor?

      First and foremost, employers must be able to demonstrate that they are unable to find a suitably skilled local worker to fill the niche position. They can prove this by showing evidence of advertising or labour market testing.

      Secondly, they must show that access to the GTES program will benefit Australia and Australians.

      Finally, the business must be of good standing with relevant authorities and agencies, as well as be a publicly listed company with a minimum annual turnover of AUD 4 million for each of the past 2 years (for established businesses).

      Can family members be included?

      GTES visa applicants can definitely include other family members in their application, provided they also meet health, identity, and character requirements.

      How does it differ from the global talent independent program?

      Unlike GTES, the global talent independent (GTI) visa does not require that you be sponsored by an Australian employer. The main requirement is that you are an exceptionally talented individual in a future-focused sector, including AgTech, defence, DigiTech, financial services, energy, and circular economy, among others.

      How long is the GTES visa application process?

      Global talent visa applicants enjoy priority processing as one of the top advantages of qualifying for this highly specialised and skilled visa.

      What are the English language requirements?

      The minimum requirement is you have at least ‘Functional’ level of English, or 4.5 points in IELTS.
