As one of the core requirements to become a full fledged Australian citizen by conferral, candidates will need to sit the citizenship test and may be interviewed to confirm their identity and gauge their English language proficiency.
For most citizenship-by-conferral applicants, the citizenship test is a fundamental requirement that, if passed, will prove the applicant’s English language competency, sufficient knowledge and understanding of Australia and their duties and entitlements as citizens, as well as show their commitment to abiding by Australian values and laws.
In order to pass the test, you must get an overall mark of at least 75%. The test comprises 20 multiple-choice questions and another five (5) related to Australian values that you must all answer correctly.
Meanwhile, some may only need an interview appointment and are not required to sit the citizenship test. This is typically for people who are only 16 to 17 years of age, over the age of 60, or those who have vision, hearing, and speech impairments.
If you fall under one of these categories, you may be required to at least demonstrate you have a basic understanding of the nature of your application. If you need an interpreter, you can bring a friend or a family member.

There are three things you can do to prepare for the Australian citizenship test and interview, namely:
1
The AUS Citizenship: Common Bond booklet is a downloadable resource that has practically all the information you need to prepare for and pass the test. It also has both testable and non-testable sections downloadable in over 40 other languages.
2
If you prefer listening to a podcast better, the five-episode, roughly 45-minute Our Common Bond podcast is a great alternative (or addition) to the reading booklet. You can download the episodes via Spotify, iTunes, or Google Podcasts.
3
The citizenship practice test is provided for free and can be taken online through the official website of the Department of Home Affairs for all candidates to take advantage of. It contains 20 multiple-choice questions that you must answer correctly or obtain a 75% mark overall. You can retake the practice test to ace it.
All in all, it may take you up to 45 minutes to complete the test and interview appointment. It may take you less if you prepare well for the 20 multiple-choice questions alongside the 5 Australian values questions and interview. This makes it very important to really prepare and practice to pass the test the first time.
Failing the test will not revoke or cancel your permanent resident status, let alone be asked to leave Australia. Besides, you can retake the test for two more attempts. There is no fee for the retake(s). The Department will let you know about your next appointment.
If you pass the test, your application shall continue being processed. The Department will then notify you via letter if they need more information from you, or if your application was officially approved. After that, you will need to attend the ceremony. You will be sent an invitation letter roughly four (4) weeks prior to the event.
How long can you wait before the citizenship ceremony? As a local council-organised event, it would depend upon the demand in your area or residential address. If you applied with your dependents, this is also a factor that may affect ceremony wait times. Visit the Department website for more information.
