    The Australian Parent Visa

The Family Migration program fosters family unity, social cohesion, and cultural diversity. It plays a crucial role in Australia’s immigration system. Moreover, it offers a pathway for eligible family members to reside and work in Australia. Contribution to the economy and becoming part of the Australian community are also the Department’s goals.

Australia offers parents of settled Australian citizens, Australian permanent residents, and eligible New Zealand citizens to live in the country with them. Each year, only a limited number of applications are accepted for the permanent Parent visa, following the Migration Program Year. You can sponsor your parents, including step-parents and/or adoptive parents for the Parent Visa in Australia, whether temporarily or permanently.

A high volume of visa applications are received and processed for each migration program year. It is capped and queued, so you can’t afford to experience long delays. For a streamlined application, we have highly qualified visa specialists who can help prepare your papers and correctly follow the process for your assurance and convenience. Get in touch with one of our consultants by booking an appointment.

    Parent Visa Options

Selecting the correct visa type depends on your parents’ individual needs. We thoroughly assess their eligibility to meet the criterion and help you make informed decisions. Part of our commitment is ensuring our recommendation will benefit you not just at the present but long term.

Here are the different options for parent visas in Australia:

    With Bridging Visa Granted

You can submit an application onshore and be issued a temporary or bridging visa for:

    • Aged Parent Visa or Subclass 804: This parent visa option is for aged parents already settled in Australia offering a long-term stay duration.
    • Contributory Aged Parent Visa or Subclass 864: Contributory Aged Parent Visa is a option for aged parents who meet age requirements and prefer a quicker pathway to Australian permanent residency.
    • Contributory Aged Parent Temporary Visa or Subclass 884 to Subclass 864: This visa option allows the Australian citizen or resident’s aged parent to stay temporarily in the country.

    Without Bridging Visa Granted

Applications may be made onshore but a bridging visa is not granted for the following:

    • Parent Visa or Subclass 103: This option is more affordable although with a longer processing time.
    • Contributory Parent Visa or Subclass 143: This option offers a permanent visa but application fee is more expensive, but you can expect faster processing.
    • Contributory Parent Temporary Visa or Subclass 173 to Subclass 143: This visa option allows a settled Australian permanent resident or citizen’s parent to reside to Australia for good.
    • Sponsored Parent (Temporary) Visa 870: This temporary visa allows an Australian citizen or permanent resident’s parent to visit the country for up to five years.

It’s essential to note that only registered migration agents and legal practitioners can lawfully assist you and provide professional visa and immigration advice. Our company offers you convenient and cost-effective solutions. We are dedicated to guiding you in getting the specific visa according to your needs.

    Requirements for Parent Visa Eligibility

There’s so much more than what you can imagine. Bringing your parents to the country allows them to explore around Australia as a permanent resident. They may also be able to sponsor other family members later on. If eligible, they can apply for Australian citizenship. But before anything else, check these key documentary requirements for eligibility.

    • To sponsor your parents, you must be an eligible child who is a settled Australian citizen, permanent resident or New Zealand citizen
    • You and your parents must meet all applicable visa conditions following Australian laws
    • You must NOT have an existing Sponsored Parent/ Temporary/ Subclass 870 visa

In addition, here are the other key eligibility requirements to obtain a Parent Visa:

    • At least half of your parent’s children should be permanent Australian residents.
    • Proof of financial stability to support parents.
    • Health and character requirements.

Prepare the primary documents of your parents using the checklist:

    • Valid passport
    • Police certificate/Character documents
    • Form 40 Sponsorship for Migration to Australia
    • Assurance of Support
    • Balance of family test
    • 45mm x 35mm recent photographs 4pcs

Application Process for Parent Visa in Australia

Before applying for an Australia visitor visa for parents, one should understand what requirements to prepare. Here is a simple guide to help you with the application process:

    Initial Consultation: Eligibility Assessment

You will decide to get either:

    • Non-Contributory Parent Visa (more affordable but longer processing time – 30 years!)
    • Contributory Parent Visa (faster processing time, usually around six years, but will require a lump sum payment prior to approval)

Additional requirements might be requested during this period such as biometrics or health exams.

    Requirement Preparation: The Essentials

    • Passport or birth certificate
    • Proof of sponsorship
    • Police certificates
    • Balance of family test
    • Proof of financial capability to support your parents

Once you have all the needed documents, these will be submitted to the Department of Home Affairs along with the mandatory fees. And so the waiting game begins.

    Processing Time

The parent visa Australia processing time could take some time, so best that you understand what to expect at this time.

Only a limited number of parent visa applications are granted every year. If your application doesn’t make the cut, it will stay on queue until slots open up for approval.

Contributory parent visa has faster processing, although more expensive. You have to pay around AUD $43,000 per parent prior to approval. When you say faster processing, it doesn’t mean like five years or lower. It means processing time could take more or less 14 years. If you think that’s long, applying for a non-contributory parent visa could take you more than three decades of waiting for approval.

But if you don’t want to wait that long, you might want to apply for an Australia visitor visa for parents while awaiting permanent residency. This type of visa lets your parents visit you for extended period without having

to wait for years-long parents visa approval.

Note that as of January 2025, Contributory parent visas are being processed for those queued up to February 2018 applications. Meanwhile, Parent visas are being processed for those queued up to December 2012. Once your Australia parent visa application is already in queue, wait until you receive updates for final processing.

Benefits and Limitations for Parent Visa

Applying for a parent visa comes with great benefits, not to mention the chance to start fresh with your parents. Here are the benefits and limitations of choosing a parent visa subclass 103:

    • Opportunity to apply for Australian citizenship upon meeting residency requirements.
    • Access to world-class healthcare and education, opportunity for career growth.
    • Sponsor other family members and bring them to Australia
    • Travel in and out of Australia while keeping your permanent residency status.

However, visa processing time could take longer – up to 31 years – depending on the type of parent visa you will apply for. Travel conditions may also apply, so make sure to plan ahead to prevent hassles and delays.

      Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

Have other questions about this type of visa? We gathered and answered some of the most
frequently asked questions about ENS 186 visa below.

How long is the processing time for the Parent Visa?

The processing time may be longer due to the high volume of Parent Visa applications each migration program year, including Australia visitor visa for parents, parent tourist visa Australia, aged parent visa Australia, contributory parent visa and contributory aged parent. As of November 2023, processing times for Parent Visas could range from several months to a few years.

Which visa is best for parents in Australia?

The Parent Permanent Subclass 103 Visa is mostly recommended for those who are seeking to relocate in Australia for good. But the best visa to apply for depends on the individual needs of applicants: Contributory Parent Visa, Temporary Sponsored Parent Visa, and Aged Parent Visa are your other options.

What are the conditions for a parent visa in Australia?

Health and character requirements, balance of family test, sponsorship from an Australian citizen child, assurance of support, and having no outstanding debts are just some of the things that are required from applicants of parent visa.

Are there any age limits for parent visas?

It depends on the type of parent visa. The Subclass 103 and Subclass 143 do not require an age limit, while the Aged Parent Visa and Contributory Aged Parent Visa requires parents old enough to qualify for the Australian Age pension.

How much will the visa for parents to Australia cost?

It starts from AUD 4,990 according to the official website of the Department of Home Affairs. But costs and fees are not fixed and may change. Consult with an immigration professional for the latest information on fees, processing times, and more.

Can I stay in Australia while waiting for a parent visa?

Yes, staying in Australia while waiting for a parent visa is possible for applications under Aged Parent Visa (subclass 804) and Contributory Aged Parent Visa (subclass 864).

Can I apply for a parent visa while in Australia?

Yes, you can. Check if your current visa allows onshore visa applications. Options such as the Aged Parents Visa (Subclass 804) or the Contributory Aged Parents (Subclass 864) are available for application while in Australia, as long as you meet the necessary requirements. However, parent visa options such as Contributory Parent Visa (Subclass 143) or Parent visa (Subclass 103) requires you to apply outside Australia.

What happens if my parent’s visa application is refused?

It could happen, but don’t worry. You can appeal the refusal through the Administrative Appeals Tribunal or submit a new application, depending on the reason for refusal. Just make sure to submit and complete the needed documents for higher chances of approval.
